The announced departure of Charles Michel from the European Council immediately became the focus of discussions across Brussels and the member states. Our Deputy Director and Head of the Brussels Office Žiga Faktor commented on several key issues related to the future functioning of the EU.

"The announcement of Charles Michel's candidacy for the June European elections has provoked a wave of critical reactions from politicians, diplomats and journalists. If successfully elected, the current president of the European Council would have to step down from his post, and this would in practice lead to a "powerlessness" over the summits of EU leaders."
