Radio Free Europe | EU Enlargement is threated by the far right parties in Member States, not in the European Parliament

Even thought parties belonging to the far right achieved good results in the European elections, their growth was not enough to have a major impact on politics in the future European Parliament. What developments can we anticipate with regard to the policy of enlargement of the EU after the elections? Žiga Faktor, deputy director and head of EUROPEUM Institute's Brussels office, comments on the situation for Serbia's Radio Free Europe.

It is true that Members of the European Parliament, as representatives of the EP delegation or as spokesmen on the various countries of the Western Balkans, are very important for EU relations with the region. In this respect, we should see the approach set out in the previous session of the European Parliament as the most credible, because it is expected that the grand coalition of European nationalists, social democrats and liberals will remain in power. We can expect a further focus on a process based on merit, focused on aspects of democratisation and the rule of law, or on coordination with the EU's common gender policy.
