On the occasion of the conference on the topic "How did the Czech Republic turn green during the European Presidency?" spoke our senior researcher Kateřina Davidová. She mentioned that the Czech Republic has promoted a unified approach of the EU countries in the energy sector during the Presidency, for example by having a higher than the standard number of ministerial councils for this issue. She also commented on the ban on selling cars with internal combustion engines after 2035. She says that it will be essential that at least part of the supply chain for electric cars is in the Czech Republic.

V úterý 13.12. 2022 proběhla konference na téma "Jak zezelenalo Česko během evropského předsednictví?", jejíž součástí byla i naše seniorní výzkumná pracovnice Kateřina Davidová. Zmínila, že Česko v rámci předsednictví prosazovalo jednotný přístup unijních států v energetice a to například nadstandardním počtem ministerských rad pro tuto problematiku. Rovněž okomentovala zákaz prodeje aut se spalovacími motory po roce 2035. Říká, že bude zásadní, aby alespoň část dodavatelského řetězce elektroaut byla v Česku.

The recent US midterm elections made headlines around the world. The main issues that voters were interested in were the state of democracy and the rule of law, abortion, the economy and education. Our intern Tomáš Moudrý addressed these topics in his blog. "The most expensive midterms in the US history are over. Republicans gained the House majority with 221 seats and the Democrats retained the Senate with 51 seats. Is this a surprising result? Partly yes, partly no. Firstly, polls and even Republicans were sure about a “Red wave“ that would sweep across the US. Instead, there was a tossup in both Chambers of the Congress. Secondly, the President’s party usually lose the midterms. One can argue that midterms from the incumbent President’s party perspective traditionally have just one major goal – to mitigate losses by the closest possible margin. The Democrats seem to have found a way to deal with this fate, despite Biden's low approval rating."

E15: Carbon tariff will help European producers, experts say. China and Russia criticize proposal
According to world agencies, the European Parliament and the EU-27 are close to reaching a preliminary agreement on the so-called carbon tariff. The instrument, known as CBAM, is intended to prevent companies that produce in the European Union and have to pay for emission allowances there from being disadvantaged against companies from non-EU countries where climate regulations are looser. According to experts, the mechanism will mainly affect Russian companies. Our researcher Kateřina Davidová also commented on this issue.

Evropský parlament a státy sedmadvacítky jsou podle světových agentur blízko uzavření předběžné dohody ohledně takzvaného uhlíkového cla. Nástroj označovaný jako CBAM má zabránit tomu, aby firmy, které vyrábějí na území Evropské unie a musejí zde platit za emisní povolenky, nebyly znevýhodněny před podniky z mimounijních zemí, kde jsou klimatické regulace volnější. Podle expertů mechanismus dopadne hlavně na ruské firmy. K této problematice se vyjádřila i naše výzkumná pracovnice Kateřina Davidová.
