Ve dnech 10. a 11. dubna 2024 se v Praze uskuteční dvoudenní konference s názvem "20 Years of Reuniting Europe's East and West", kterou pořádá Institut pro evropskou politiku EUROPEUM ve spolupráci s Ministerstvem zahraničních věcí v rámci platformy Think Visegrad a projektu (Re)uniting the East and West: Reflections on the 2004 EU enlargement (REWEU) podpořených Mezinárodním visegrádským fondem a Evropskou komisí. Součástí programu bude i druhý ročník EU Enlargement Forum.

e15 | Enlargement of the Schengen area to include Romania and Bulgaria
The Schengen area of free movement of goods and persons will was extended to Romania and Bulgaria from Sunday 31 March. The two countries have been waiting seventeen years for this moment, since they joined the European Union. For now, only the maritime and air borders are removed, but land borders should follow in the next few months. Viktor Daněk, deputy director of the EUROPEUM Institute, commented on both the economic benefits and possible risks of partial enlargement for the daily e15.

RTVS | The European Commission recommends initiating accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that the European Commission will recommend initiation of accession negotiations with Bosnia and Herzegovina. In recent months, reform efforts have been evident, the Bosnian government has reached agreements even with the separatist entity of Republika Srpska on key reforms. However, the conditions have not yet been fully met, and many other reforms, such as electoral system reform, are still pending. Researcher from EUROPEUM Institute, Jana Juzová, discussed it for Slovakian RTVS.

A new policy paper, produced with the support of the Visegrad Fund project, analyses the views of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary on the further enlargement of the European Union. With the granting of candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine and the recognition of Georgia as a potential candidate in June 2022, the issue of reforming the EU accession process is becoming absolutely crucial and, in the context of the war in Ukraine, a divisive issue for the V4 countries. Discussions on further changes to the enlargement methodology may reinforce the image of EU membership as a moving target with constantly changing rules, especially as the current methodology has still not been fully applied.
