Czech cities can draw inspiration from southern Europe in combating heat, such as Barcelona, which has effective plans and is better adapted to high temperatures. For instance, the city boasts over two hundred "climate refuges" in publicly accessible spaces like museums, galleries, offices, and libraries, providing drinking water, air conditioning, and informational services. However, the Czech Republic is unprepared for heatwaves. Researcher Katarína Svitková from the EUROPEUM Institute commented on the situation for the Czech News Agency.
For example, the Barcelona city administration conducted extensive data collection. They mapped building types, extent and accessibility of green areas, as well as data on types of establishments and movement of goods. The resulting dataset helps the city plan targeted measures in advance each year.
