SUMMARY OF EXPERIENCES WITH THE INVOLVEMENT OF CSOS IN V4 IN THE DECARBONISATION PROCESS

The project is focused on the examination of the role of non-governmental organizations in the process of decarbonization of coal regions in V4 countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Slovakia). The aim of the project is to describe the best and worst practices of the individual processes for Serbia, who awaits the transformation of its energy mix, largely based on coal. The examined V4 countries have had a slightly different share of coal in their energy mix, while the largest one being in Poland and the second largest one in the Czech Republic, followed by Hungary and Slovakia. There are many similarities and differences in their takes on decarbonisation, thus providing different range of experiences.

Projekt je zaměřen na zkoumání role nevládních organizací v procesu dekarbonizace uhelných regionů v zemích V4 (Česká republika, Maďarsko, Polsko, Slovensko). Cílem projektu je popsat nejlepší a nejhorší praxi jednotlivých procesů pro Srbsko, které čeká transformace jeho energetického mixu založeného z velké části na uhlí. Zkoumané země V4 mají mírně odlišný podíl uhlí ve svém energetickém mixu, přičemž největší je v Polsku a druhý největší v České republice, následuje Maďarsko a Slovensko. V jejich přístupu k dekarbonizaci existuje mnoho podobností i rozdílů, a poskytují tak různou škálu zkušeností.

Background paper Think Tank Forum | Green agenda in the Western Balkans

Researcher Michal Hrubý prepared a background paper on the Green Agenda in the Western Balkans in the framework of the Think Tank Forum held in the first half of October 2022. In the paper, he discusses the role of the Green Agenda itself and its future. Indeed, the so-called Green Deal is the cornerstone of the EU's climate agenda, and the Western Balkans has declared the importance of this agreement by signing the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB) in 2011.

Our researcher Kateřina Davidová has written in the professional journal FORUM of Social Policy a short essay on how the Green Deal can be socially progressive. In the article, she summarises the current development of the Green Deal for Europe with a focus on socio-economic areas. The text argues that a socially just transformation to a low-carbon economy will only be achieved when the polluter pays principle is respected and free allowances are no longer handed out to big industry.

Deník N: The Green Deal is more important than ever, says the Decarbonising Automotive Transport conference

Our researcher Michal Hrubý attended the conference on Decarbonisation of Automotive Transport where he took part in the debate. We are on the threshold of a decision about the future of Czech car transport. Demand for electromobility is growing exponentially globally, as is the development of battery technology. In the future, these could become value-added products that will kick-start our economy and return the Czech Republic to a leading position in the investment environment. According to representatives of the European Parliament, the state administration, the automotive industry and independent experts on electromobility, it is now important for the Czech Republic to leave the scepticism of change behind and start educating and preparing for the decarbonisation of automotive transport. Not only for the environmental impact, but especially for the future competitiveness of the sector. This was stated in a debate at the Decarbonisation of Automotive Transport conference organised by EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy on Tuesday 1 March.
