Five candidates for the post of European Commission chief clashed in a Europe-wide debate on Thursday. Two factions did not field a candidate. The system of spitzenkandidaten, i.e. the leading candidates of each group for the post of president of the European executive, was created as an effort by MEPs to increase transparency in the filling of the highest posts in the European Union, which clearly includes the president of the Commission. Who will be the one who will form the majority after the elections and does the current head of the Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, have a significant opponent among the other spitzenkandidaten? Viktor Daněk, deputy director of EUROPEUM Institute, analysed the debate for RTVS.

V celoevropské debatě se ve čtvrtek střetlo pět kandidátů a kandidátek na post šéfa Evropské komise. Dvě frakce svého kandidáta nepostavily. Systém spitzenkandidátů, tedy vedoucích kandidátů jednotlivých frakcí na post předsedy evropské exekutivy, vznikl jako snaha europoslanců zvýšit transparentnost obsazování nejvyšších míst v Evropské unii, mezi které předseda komise jednoznačně spadá. Kdo bude tím, kdo bude po volbách utvářet většinu a má současná šéfka komise Ursula von der Leyenová mezi ostatními spitzenkandidáty výrazného oponenta? Pro RTVS rozebíral Viktor Daněk, zástupce ředitele Institutu EUROPEUM.

At the extraordinary summit of European Council in Brussels, the original economic debates quickly turned to serious geopolitical issues, such as the extension of sanctions against Iran and the strengthening of Ukrainian air defenses. However, as pointed out by Vít Havelka for Slovakian TA3, an analyst at the EUROPEUM Institute, there is no fundamental shift in the EU's approach to countries such as Russia, Israel or Iran.
