How to improve the EU enlargement process? How to ensure that the democratising effect of the accession process is sustained beyond the eventual accession to the EU? And are EU institutional reforms a necessary condition for EU enlargement? Answers to these and other questions are offered by the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy's contribution to the National Convention on the EU's roundtable on Balkans, Turkey or Ukraine: the future of enlargement policy in the context of institutional settings.

National Convention on the EU | Background material: The European Political Community and its future potential
Our Senior Research Fellow Jana Juzová, Associate Research Fellow Zuzana Kasáková and Head of the Brussels Office Žiga Faktor prepared the background material for the roundtable of the National Convention on the EU. The topic is "The European Political Community and its future potential". Three main questions are put to the roundtable: What potential does the European Political Community offer and how can it complement existing platforms and processes? In which areas of cooperation does the platform have the greatest potential and what should it focus on? What format and modus operandi would be most beneficial for the Platform to fulfil its purpose?

National Convention on the EU | Recommendation: response to the US Inflation Reduction Act

National Convention on the EU | Background paper: reaction to the US Inflation Reduction Act
Kateřina Davidová and Tereza Novotná prepared a background paper for the Round Table of the National Convention on the EU on Reactions to the US Inflation Reduction Act. Three main questions are put to the Roundtable: What impact can the IRA have on Transatlantic relations and free trade in general, and how should the EU try to actively shape these relations? How can the EU ensure the competitiveness and strengthen the productivity of its industry in the future and promote the development of EU produced green technologies? How will the changes affect the Czech Republic directly and how should the Czech Republic proceed within the EU to avoid being left behind in the "green race"? Which specific climate-neutral (net-zero) industrial sectors should the Czech Republic focus on?

National Convention on the EU | Recommendations: Energy market review
Our Senior Research Fellow Vít Havelka elaborated recommendations resulting from the roundtable discussion of the National Convention on the EU held on 31 March 2023 on the topic "Energy Market Review". Among the recommendations made for the Czech Republic are, for example, to define its energy concept well in the light of the regional context and European energy policy. Another recommendation is that the Czech Republic should continue to incentivise energy savings as a key part of its preparedness for next winter, in line with the extension of the Regulation on coordinated measures to reduce gas demand.

National Convention on the EU | Background paper: review of the European energy market
Vít Havelka, Rebeka Hengalová, and Katarína Svitková prepared a background paper for the National Convention on the EU Round Table on the Review of the European Energy Market. How can the EC proposal for the revision of the European electricity market be assessed from the Czech Republic's perspective? How can the revision of the internal gas market rules be assessed in the context of the energy crisis? How should the EU prepare for the coming winter?

National Convention on the EU | Recommendation: Evaluation of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU
Our associate research fellow Zuzana Kasáková and our senior research fellow Vít Havelka prepared a recommendation resulting from the round table discussion of the National Convention on the EU held on February 24, 2023 on the topic "Evaluation of the Czech Presidency of the Council of the EU". The issued recommendations for the Czech Republic include, for example, the use of the positive result of the Czech presidency, its improved image, and contacts for formulating and promoting the long-term priorities of the Czech Republic in the European Union. Another recommendation is that the Czech Republic should ensure adequate security, both personnel and professional, for the awarding of public contracts for the future Czech presidency.

National Convention on the EU | Background paper: formats of regional cooperation from the perspective of the Czech Republic
Our senior researcher Jana Juzová and associate research fellow Zuzana Kasáková prepared background material for the Round Table of the National Convention on the EU on the topic of Regional Cooperation Formats from the Czech perspective. The Round Table is presented with three main questions: what position should the Visegrad Group have in Czech foreign policy? How should the Czech Republic approach other regional cooperation formats in Central Europe? How should the Czech Republic use its involvement in European territorial cooperation?

National Convention on the EU | Recommendation: Ukraine's Integration into the EU
Our Senior Research Fellow Jana Juzová has prepared a summary and recommendations based on the roundtable discussion of the National Convention on the EU held on 26 October 2022 on the topic "Ukraine's Integration into the EU". The Convention produced three recommendations based on the answers to the following questions: How can the EU and the Czech Republic support Ukraine in the post-war reconstruction and reforms necessary for EU integration? What tools does the EU have at its disposal for the deeper economic and political integration of Ukraine? Is the EU ready to fully integrate Ukraine and other candidate countries?

National Convention on the EU | Recommendation: Strategic Compass
On Wednesday 21 September 2022, the National Convention on the EU took place. The roundtable featured three recommendations, which were formulated by our office and project manager Alexandra Ilkova together with our researcher Danielle Piatkiewicz. The convention produced three recommendations by answering the following questions: How will the implementation of the Strategic Compass contribute to shaping the EU's defence capabilities and how can the EU Strategic Compass and the NATO Strategic Concept make the EU a stronger and more capable guarantor of security? How will the Strategic Compass address current and emerging security threats within the strategic areas of competence? What can CZ PRES achieve in the implementation of the Strategic Compass?

National Convention on the EU: EU relations with the Indo-Pacific region from the perspective of the Czech Republic
Tereza Novotná, Senior Associate Research Fellow, and Alexandra Visnerova, project manager, prepared a background paper on EU-Indo-Pacific relations from the perspective of the Czech Republic. How will the new geopolitical context resulting from the war in Ukraine affect the Indo-Pacific region, including relations with China, and how should the EU respond? Which other partners should the EU work with and which ones should the Czech Republic focus on as a priority during its EU Council Presidency? Which sectors within the European Indo-Pacific Strategy should the EU focus on most and which should the Czech Republic prioritise during its Presidency of the Council?
