Green Deal

We would like to invite you to a debate on "Green Deal and the energy crisis in the Czech information space". The debate will take place on Tuesday, 17 January from 18:00 to 19:30. The debate will also be available to watch online on the Facebook event page.

The solution to the energy problems related to the war in Ukraine and Russian gas supplies was clear to the EU. It will lie in energy savings and, above all, in clean energy sources. What will energy reform look like and what plans does the EU have? Our Senior Research Fellow Kateřina Davidová commented on the Green Deal and the impact of the Czech Presidency on this topic.

Researcher Michal Hrubý prepared a background paper on the Green Agenda in the Western Balkans in the framework of the Think Tank Forum held in the first half of October 2022. In the paper, he discusses the role of the Green Agenda itself and its future. Indeed, the so-called Green Deal is the cornerstone of the EU's climate agenda, and the Western Balkans has declared the importance of this agreement by signing the Green Agenda for the Western Balkans (GAWB) in 2011.

Tatiana Mindeková, our project manager and junior researcher, wrote a blog named “How do Czech and Slovak governmental parties perceive the EU Green Deal? Online monitoring of Facebook posts”. In this blog, Tatiana analysed approaches of Czech and Slovak parliamentary parties to the European Green Deal and identified whether the parties and their representatives are supportive or critical towards it.

Our researcher Kateřina Davidová has written in the professional journal FORUM of Social Policy a short essay on how the Green Deal can be socially progressive. In the article, she summarises the current development of the Green Deal for Europe with a focus on socio-economic areas. The text argues that a socially just transformation to a low-carbon economy will only be achieved when the polluter pays principle is respected and free allowances are no longer handed out to big industry.

Our researcher Michal Hrubý provided a commentary to the Reseach institute for labour and socisl affairs (VÚPSV) on the Green Deal. He outlined the important foundations on which the agreement is based and noted how deepening knowledge will have a positive impact on society as well as on the fight against climate change.

We would like to invite you to the next debate within the Café Evropa series, this time on the topic "Café Evropa: Facts and myths about the Green Deal - are its goals an opportunity or a threat?". The debate will take place on 15 February at 17:30. Do Czech citizens have sufficient awareness of the Green Deal and the "Fit for 55" package and how should public institutions and the media communicate these topics to the public in an understandable way? Our researcher Vít Havelka has written an Update entitled Czech Perception of the EU Climate Policy, in which he discusses the Green Deal and brings readers up to date on the latest findings and issues that could arise in the future.

Our researcher Kateřina Davidová contributed a chapter "The Middle Class as a Driver of Decarbonisation" to the Green Deal for Europe publication. The authors of this publication propose solutions that reflect Europe's economic and social reality and stress that the Green Deal debate must reflect the broader aspects of the whole issue.
