Our research fellow Christian K. Lassen commented for radio RTVS on the possible impact of the planned deportation policy tightening in Germany. Germany plans to speed up the process of deportation of migrants that do not qualify for asylum protection. Chancellor Angela Merkel stressed at the German Bundestag that the situation from last autumn, when thousands of refugees came to Germany, must not be repeated. At the beginning of the year, a Berlin office to take over the process of deportation will be formed.

There are some logistical complications. Moreover, the administrative process of deportation is very complicated. It is often done against their will. It is necessary to find, organize the departure, and make sure that the migrants have a place to return to. In my opinion, the promise to deport such a large number of people is solely a populist promise, which is also controversial due to the fact that human rights might be violated during the process. Especially in a country where safe zones can become war zones very quickly.
