In an article by the Czech News Agency (ČTK), two of our experts - Kateřina Davidová and Jana Juzová - comment on the speech of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. Davidová evaluated mainly the content of the speech concerning energy, while Juzová focused on the issue of strengthening democracy on the European continent and the EU's enlargement towards the Western Balkans.

The energy transition and decarbonisation of transport require minerals and metals, the extraction of which is mainly controlled by China. Clean energy technologies are much more material intensive, but Europe has limited access to these raw materials. Our researcher , Michal Hrubý, provided Ekonews with a commentary on the topic of clean energy and minerals.

At an emergency meeting of EU ministers called by the Czech Republic, ministers came up with proposals on how to tackle rising energy prices in the EU. The meeting was an important demonstration of European unity, says our senior research fellow Kateřina Davidová. At the same time, Davidová points to the overestimated and often demonised impact of Germany's nuclear exit on the energy situation.

On Friday, European energy ministers, finance ministers, and EU central bank chiefs will arrive in Prague. EcoFin - the two-day meeting will focus on the economic impact of the war in Ukraine, but also on reforms of the tax system. Our Senior Research Fellow Vít Havelka commented for the E15 website on the issue of tourist visas and their restrictions for Russians. At a summit in Prague on Wednesday, EU foreign ministers agreed on a compromise regarding the ban on issuing tourist visas to citizens of the Russian Federation.

Alexandr Lagazzi, an associate research fellow at our Institute, commented for Slovak RTV on the government crisis in Italy, which is leading to early elections. These are likely to take place at the end of September.

Tereza Novotná, an associate research fellow at our Institute, is a co-author of an article on 9DASHLINE, about Korea's need to cooperate with Taiwan in order to have a credible Indo-Pacific strategy.

Tereza Novotná, an associate research fellow at our Institute, wrote an article for Korea on Time, where she argues, that from a security perspective, the EU-South Korea partnership has been marked by three key topics: the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine, North Korea, and US-China strategic competition. It would be a smart choice for Yoon’s team to continue and expand on the New Southern Policy rather than trying to come up with a new framework. In the end, it will be neither Eastern Europe nor North Korea but the Indo-Pacific which will hold the key to the future of the EU-Korea partnership.

Tereza Novotná, an associate research fellow at our Institute, has provided a commentary for the E15 portal. In the article, she discusses the visit of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Prague and the energy crisis that threatens the EU. According to Novotná, responsibility also lies with other countries, including the Czech Republic, which also failed to develop other energy sources in time.
