Germany today faces similar existential geopolitical challenges. Vladimir Putin has launched the first interstate war in Europe and frequently threatens nuclear conflict with the West. Olaf Scholz admitted that the peace dividend is fading and that Germany needs to strengthen its defence and security. However, after three years of war, the Zeitenwende (second turning point) proclaimed by the German chancellor has essentially failed to materialise. Scholz has been at the forefront of the deterioration in Germany's relations with its neighbours and key EU partners - France and Poland.
