On Monday, the European Parliament will hold the first hearings with the candidates for the new European Commissioners. Jozef Síkela will appear before MEPs on Wednesday. If all the candidates are successful, the new European Commission could be operational from 1st December. Martin Vokálek, executive director of EUROPEUM Institute, commented for ČT24.

Grilling has many purposes and meanings. In the first case, it is a kind of democratic control of the whole European Parliament and the whole provision of the Commission, because the whole European Commission, which is the executive power of the European Union, is appointed by the Member States. But what this grilling guarantees is that the elected Members, who are directly elected by the citizens, have control over how the European Commission will be composed.
