ČRo Plus | AfD on the rise: Election shows divided Germany and unresolved problems

The escalation of attacks on citizens in cities such as Aschaffenburg and Magdeburg and the escalation of the migration issue certainly helped the AfD to win. CDU chairman Friedrich Merz aptly commented that the growth of the AfD is the result of long-standing unresolved problems, and that if these can be resolved, the party's support will fall.
Looking at the electoral maps, the AfD scored particularly well in eastern Germany, where it won up to 40% of the vote. This trend can partly be explained by a persistent sense of inequality - many residents of the eastern Länder still feel like 'second-class citizens'. The physical Berlin Wall may have fallen, but it still exists in many people's minds.
