Several EU member states – France, Germany, and the Netherlands – as well as the bloc itself have announced their strategy for the Indo-Pacific in the past years. The Indo-Pacific, a vast region spanning from Africa's east coast to the Pacific islands, has become increasingly strategic. After four decades of relative peace, it has turned into a prime area for strategic competition. The U.S.-China rivalry is reshaping the balance of power at play. Military budgets are growing and tensions in so-called grey zones are intensifying.
Together with these traditional security threats, other key issues have shaped the prosperity and sustainable and inclusive development of the Indo-Pacific. These challenges include maritime security, connectivity, digital and cybersecurity, fight against climate change, energy transition, and the protection of biodiversity, education and youth, etc.
