Nilsu Eledağ has written a blog about Türkiye's role in determining Sweden's NATO membership and concerns about terrorism and anti-Islamist movements. Serbia's refusal to recognise Kosovo, which unilaterally declared independence in 2008, is at the root of many problems within the region of Western Balkan. It hinders both countries’ EU membership paths, creates destabilisation in the Balkans, as visible in the recent unrest in northern Kosovo, and hinders regional economic cooperation. On Wednesday, June 7, a debate took place as part of the Café Evropa cycle, on the topic: "Turkey after the elections, which direction will it go?". The invitation to the debate was accepted by Lucia Najšlová, political scientist and author of the book Turkey and the EU: The Politics of Belonging, as well as by Deník N journalist Dominika Píhová and Břetislav Tureček, head of the Center for Middle East Studies at the Metropolitan University in Prague. The debate was moderated by Žiga Faktor, the head of the Brussels office of the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy.

Our Senior Research Fellow, Kateřina Davidová and Research Associate, Jonathan Lyons, in partnership with the Global Policy Research Group, have collaborated on a study that examines the secure and sustainable supply of critical raw materials (CRMs) that are key to green technologies. The study recommends a strategy for Sweden and the Czech Republic to ensure sustainable supply chains to help the transition to green technologies.

In her policy paper, our Junior Researcher, Silke Maes, discusses the challenges posed by the increasing digitalization of the economy to tax systems. It highlights the problems of tax avoidance and competition arising from the increasing reliance on intangible assets and the emergence of highly profitable digital business models. The paper focuses on the efforts made at the OECD, EU, and national levels to address these issues.

In July 2023, the Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM organized its 20th edition of the European Summer School in Prague. This year’s jubilee edition programme focused on the complexities of climate change and the EU’s approach and solutions towards this ever-growing issue, entailing climate change’s political, economic, security, and social aspects.

On June 20, 2023, the EUROPEUM Institute for European Policy organized a closed round table entitled Electric cars and jobs: how to prepare for changes in the automotive industry?. The debate was attended by experts from the Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs and the Ministry of the Environment, as well as from international research organizations, institutions of the European Union, the private sector and, last but not least, representatives of trade unions operating in the automotive industry. The report was written by Rebeka Hengalová.

A new policy paper, produced with the support of the Visegrad Fund project, analyses the views of the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland and Hungary on the further enlargement of the European Union. With the granting of candidate status to Moldova and Ukraine and the recognition of Georgia as a potential candidate in June 2022, the issue of reforming the EU accession process is becoming absolutely crucial and, in the context of the war in Ukraine, a divisive issue for the V4 countries. The authors of the publication are Jana Juzová, Ferenc Németh, Tomáš Strážay and Marta Szpala.

In this paper, Jana Juzová, together with Žiga Faktor and Constanza Celoria, are providing a comprehensive analysis of the proposals initiated by the think-tank community as well as the current initiatives and discussions at the EU level; they are identifying opportunities and areas where tangible progress can be achieved, and providing recommendations to policymakers on how to turn these concepts into reality in the foreseeable future.
