Euractiv | German conservatives will try to get Europe moving

What do the results of the German parliamentary elections mean for Europe? Executive Director of the EUROPEUM Institute, Martin Vokálek, commented for Euractiv.

The result of the CDU/CSU is disappointing. It is also a historically poor outcome. It is about four percentage points lower than the worst result of former Chancellor Angela Merkel for the CDU/CSU.

For Germany, these elections were a strong wake-up call — almost one-third of the seats went to parties that are on the fringes and extreme fringes of the political spectrum.

After the elections, hopefully, Germany will take a firmer stance on geopolitical issues, become a more active player, and join France and Poland, who are striving to revitalize Europe.
