Coal has been an important part of the Czech economy for decades. As a fossil fuel, however, it is a significant producer of greenhouse gases, especially CO2. Our Research Fellow Jonathan Lyons and Senior Research Fellow Kateřina Davidová write in their commentary about the benefits of decarbonisation and switching to wind energy.

"In order for the Czech Republic to take full advantage of the benefits of wind energy, the government needs to create an appropriate support mechanism to improve and expand grid connectivity and to put pressure on transmission system operators to provide energy storage. At the same time, however, the state should make it easier to obtain permits to build wind farms and ensure that the land-use planning process is fair. This is the only way it can take full advantage of the wind energy it will need to harness if it is to meet the EU targets it has committed to."
