Last year, when the Eastern Partnership celebrated its 10-year anniversary, a strategic reflection and public consultation on the future of the policy were organised. The European Commission published results of this process in mid-March 2020 in its Communication “Eastern Partnership policy beyond 2020: Reinforcing Resilience – an Eastern Partnership that delivers for all”. Since then, a debate among the EU Member States as well as EU institutions and other stakeholders has been taking place to determine the future long-term priorities of the policy. On 18 June 2020, a high-level conference of the EU Member States, EU institutions and eastern partners is taking place that is to assess the progress achieved and outline the future steps of the Eastern Partnership in the new decade. The question, however, remains what the future priorities of the Eastern Partnership should be beyond 2020? How to make sure that the Eastern Partnership really fits for purpose and delivers for all? What role should the countries of Visegrad group and the EU, including its institutions and Member States, play? And how the Czech V4 presidency of 2019-20 contributed to making the partnership well-equipped for the new decade? The event is co-organized by The Think Visegrad Platform and Association for International Affairs and represents a follow up to a debate on the state of Eastern Partnership organised in December 2019. Background paper to the event, which was written by Pavel Havlíček is accessible here.
