16. February 2017

On 23 February our Tereza Novotna together with the London School of Economics will organise a seminar on the topic of foreign policy and trade under Trump's presidency at the Institute for European Studies - ULB (Spaak room, 39 avenue F.D. Roosevelt) at 5 P.M. (registration from 4:30 P.M.)

In his first month as US President, Donald Trump launched various controversial policies such as a travel ban on citizens from seven majority-Muslim countries, efforts to start building a wall with Mexico and withdrawing the US from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). Although President Trump has in fact been delivering on his campaign promises, his actions have faced widespread criticisms and protests across the US, Europe and the world from politicians and publics alike. What actions can we therefore expect from the new US administration vis-à-vis Europe? Will President Trump continue to support NATO? Will the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) suffer the same fate as TPP? What’s next for the EU-US relations and for transatlantic relations more broadly? What role can EU institutions and their top representatives play in this new transatlantic context?

Confirmed speakers:

  • Dr Tim Oliver, LSE IDEAS Dahrendorf Fellow
  • Dr Tereza Novotna, FNRS Post-doctoral Researcher, IEE-ULB and Senior Associate Research Fellow, EUROPEUM
  • Mr Geoffrey Harris, formerly at the European Parliament's Liaison Office in Washington, DC
  • Mr Richard Tibbels, Head of the US and Canada Division, European External Action Service
  • Ms Sandrine Dixson-Decleve, Democrats Abroad Belgium
  • Prof. Mario Telo, IEE-ULB (chair) - TBC
