ČT24 | Visit of the European Commission President to the Czech Republic

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen arrived in the Czech Republic. She met with President Petr Pavel and Prime Minister Petr Fiala. The visit was part of the campaign ahead of the European Parliament elections in June. The European Union has approved a migration pact, and from 2026 individual states will either accept their share of refugees or pay to opt out of this obligation. However, since the Czech Republic has already accepted a large number of refugees since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, it should temporarily be exempt from this obligation. However, as noted by Viktor Daněk, deputy director of the Institute for European Policy EUROPEUM, this is not an exemption explicitly granted to Czechia. Exemptions are determined based on the number of people granted asylum or similar protection in a given country.

Evropská unie schválila migrační pakt a od roku 2026 mají jednotlivé státy možnost přijmout svůj díl uprchlíků nebo se z povinnosti vyplatit. Protože však Česká republika od vypuknutí války na Ukrajině přijala velké množství uprchlíků, měla by ji z této povinnosti prozatím vyvazovat výjimka. Jak však podotkl zástupce ředitele Institutu pro evropskou politiku EUROPEUM Viktor Daněk, nejedná se o výjimku, která by byla výslovně přičtena České republice. Výjimky se stanovují podle počtu lidí s azylem nebo podobnou ochranou v daném státu.

According to a new survey by the Ipsos agency for Euronews, ANO party has the highest support leading up to the June elections, followed by the SPOLU coalition, with Mayors and independents (STAN) holding third place. ANO party could potentially gain up to nine seats, while STAN also show increased support. On the other hand, the SPOLU coalition is not expected to achieve the anticipated level of support. The decision to participate in the elections as part of this coalition could benefit Christian and Democratic Union - Czechoslovak People's Party (KDU-ČSL), but it may harm TOP 09.
