ČT24 | Northern Macedonia elects new head of state

Polls opened in North Macedonia on Wednesday for the first round of the presidential elections. Seven candidates are running for the presidency in a country gripped by political tensions, disappointment with democratic reforms and aspirations to join the European Union. Jana Juzová, a senior researcher at EUROPEUM Institute, analysed the situation in an interview for ČT24.

The presidential role in North Macedonia is not that crucial. The system is similar to the one we have in the Czech Republic, so in terms of the direction of the country and important decisions, the May elections will be more crucial, when citizens will elect representatives to the Parliament and then the government will be formed.
