Third year | Decarbonisation of the Czech automotive industry

The climate team of EUROPEUM is currently delivering the 3rd year of its project focused on the decarbonisation of the automotive industry in the Czech Republic. We want to build upon our experience and move this work forward with a more targeted approach. We will focus on three main areas, which we have identified as crucial parts of the puzzle for transitioning to cleaner modes of transport.

• technological challenges – critical raw materials, battery supply chains, heavy-duty

vehicles

• social equity issues – just transition of the automotive sector, re-skilling of workers, investments

• communication of the green transition and policies – understanding public opinions, capacity-building for journalists and communicators.

Project goals:

to enable effective decarbonization of the automotive industry in the Czech Republic
to work with key stakeholders within the area of the automotive industry and decarbonization to bridge the gap between policymakers, unions, and companies
to improve the way green transition is communicated by Czech media
to provide evidence-based recommendations to the stakeholders involved in the decarbonization process
to continue cooperation with other Czech as well as international NGOs and think tanks working on climate policies, providing our expertise on road transport-related topics

Activities:

producing at least two policy papers focusing on the socio-economic aspects of automotive decarbonization (Just Transition, re-skilling of workers, investment needs) and technical challenges to the transformation (battery supply chains, critical raw materials)
organizing two expert roundtables, bringing together stakeholders from public and private sectors
participating in advocacy meetings, conferences and webinars
organizing a workshop for journalists and communication specialists to build capacity on topics related to green transformation
gathering first-hand knowledge about the automotive sector via study visits to regions with a high concentration of automotive manufacturing
regularly informing about our work via social media, op-eds, commentaries, interviews, and podcasts
